I'm in love with this record. I had demoed "Back in the Circus" and "Everything I Wanted" and "Sally" about a year ago, then took a breather. When I came back to them I realized I had caught a certain vibe that was going to be the measure for whatever else I would put on the record. There was an intimacy to the vocal and a beautiful balance that it held with the quirky loops and samples that Ryan and I put in. We built it together from there, adding things as it needed. It really was fun working in bits and pieces, starting up when there was more inspiration and giving it some time when we needed a break.
It was also the first time I'd co-written a song. Eric Bazilian and I had a blast working on "Less Than Love is Nothing."
And then Goffrey had the idea for "Fire and Rain" my first cover song!!!
Anyway, it was bizarre flying across country with all of this work in one fire wire drive. Making records has certainly changed since I started. I think it's good and bad. You could get lazy because everything's fixable. I tried not to do that here. I wanted to leave the grit and the immediacy of the vocal takes in particular. The really good part of the technology is being able to try crazy ideas quickly by shifting parts and sections around. Then you just undo it if it doesn't work.
