Live
RELEASED: February 16, 1999
RECORD LABEL: Bad Dog Records

I had originally thought I would go into the studio to record some old, and a few new songs, in a rawer fashion, similar to what we do live. At the same time I decided to record a few shows, just for the heck of it. (Consequently we did it pretty low tech. We used 2 DA - 88 machines, and took a feed from the house board.) Anyway, although I loved my new songs, the combination just wasn't working. I think the original versions were so good as recordings that trying to re-record them in the studio just wasn't special enough. So I decided to go back and listen to the live tapes.

Wow! They sounded pretty cool, and captured what I had hoped we would in the studio. ok, so it's live, low tech, wit h all the sonic imperfections, crashes and clashes. But it's got a vibe. Some of it is just me, some the dream trio with Ingrid and Nick. We even managed to get something from an outdoor show we did in Boston, in the middle of Hurricane Bonnie, with the whole band, including Duke Levine on guitar, and Mike Rivard on bass, and Tom Hambridge on drums and backgrounds. (There was this guy sweeping water off the stage during most of the show. I can't believe anybody stayed, let alone the fact that we actually got two songs.) There's an incredible version of "10Ђ Wings" with Ingrid on keyboard and this amazing cellist named Gerri Sutyak. And Brian Blade, the drummer of life, joins me on "West Point," and plays this very simple, but very cool drum part. He also plays with us on "Always" (yes, "Always" from Grace and Gravity!), and "Blood From a Stone." We also got this wicked recording of "In The Gloaming" from a Chicago show tape taken right off the house board. Oh! I almost forgot, I even played fretless bass on 2 songs.

Rolling Stone (2/15/99) - "...Brooke is clear folk clarity cut with pure rock opacity. Her vocal pitch is spectacular, her melodies unwind and detail themselves at unhurried rhythmic paces, and turns like "Is This All" and "Always" evoke Virginia Woolf's personal odysseys and Audrey Hepburn's rich subtlety ... The world hasn't heard the end of her."
