Steady Pull represents huge shifts for me. Death in the family, moving cross country. Life changing in more ways than I could ever have imagined until I was thrown in to it. So there's turmoil here, and resolution. High spirits and dark moments. Leaving one life and falling head over heels again out of the blue!!
Bob Clearmountain and I co-produced the record and had a blast. It really was like Christmas every day. Neil Finn came by and sang on "New Dress" one day. Marcus Miller knocked me out on two songs the week after that. Michael Franti, Joe Sample, Mitchell Froom – I was so lucky to be able to bring all my fantasy people together here.
And I played a bunch of instruments I hadn't ever tried on a record yet, even arranged the strings on "New Dress." I guess it's all about the steady pull of self confidence, the pull of that certainty in the pit of your stomach that keeps saying, "come on, you've got something to say. Now say it." |
