Releases from The Story
Jennifer Kimball and I became "The Story" when we first released "Grace in Gravity" on a small independent label. We'd been calling ourselves "Jonatha and Jennifer" since we started performing at Amherst College, and we thought we should find something a little less bulky to go by. It served us well – a lot of the songs do feel like entering short stories, inhabiting the characters for the duration and then, (luckily), leaving. We thought it would be easier to spell too, but once in a while, we'd pull up to a gig and plastered on the marquee would be, "Tonight, The Storm."

The Angel In The House
BUY THIS CD
RELEASED: July 20, 1993
RECORD LABEL: Elektra Entertainment Angel in the House is full of songs that had been brewing for a while. Alain had wisely felt that "So Much Mine" should take it's time to come to fruition, so we saved it for Angel. We were all very much influenced by the Brazilian music that Ben and Alain were really involved with around Boston at the time. I would wake up with these traditional brazilian grooves in my head and insist that we try them. It's a cool exploration. We took a lot of risks on this record. "In the Gloaming" will always haunt me, and "At the still Point" is still my favorite. It was also amazing to have the budget to be able to work with Elliot Scheiner when we mixed it. "Angel" came at a time when triple A radio was the new untapped format, and our sound really fit the new niche. Elektra did a pretty good job of getting us out there and supporting the record. |

Grace In Gravity
BUY THIS CD
RELEASED: 1992
RECORD LABEL: Elektra Entertainment Jennifer and I originally recorded this album for a small independent label in Connecticut, Green Linnet Records. Anyone who has the original, don't show it around!! Elektra, (Tommy Lipuma) heard it after I gave it to some songwriter I met at a USO benefit, I was dancing, he was working for Tommy. Elektra rereleased it with new art, and helped us out on our first national tour as the Story. I think mostly the idea was to lay some groundwork for the album that would follow. Grace in Gravity is a collection of some of the first songs I ever wrote, back to college days. "Love is more Thicker than Forget" was my first song -- a college asssignment --. We were to take the words of an e.e. cummings poem and set them to music. enough said. It's still one of the oddest favorite songs. "Always" was also one of the first, and "Over Oceans" -- that collegiate angst and longing. I think we didn't sleep for the whole month that we were making the record. We Were all such newcomers to the process. So we put a futon down in the studio and took turns napping when we couldn't make it through the final mix week. I remember Coleman Rogers got MVP because he probably got the least sleep of all -- he was the only one at that point who knew how to make everything work! I also remember, I hadn't figured out yet how to play with a pick and mute the strings at the same time. So Coleman held his finger over the strings of my guitar at the saddle for the whole of "Perfect Crime" . I still can't quite get that good a sound. And that's why he's credited with "saddle finger" in the liner notes. |
