Note: So excited to welcome author Sheila O'Connor as our special guest! Her book Evidence of V: A Novel in Fragments, Facts and Fictions, is inspired by her search for her unknown maternal grandmother. Through documents of the era, unsealed court files and family secrets, Sheila discovers V, a talented young singer who was incarcerated in Sauk Centre, MN in 1935 with the sole crime of being pregnant at 15. Evidence of V is a story of exploitation and erasure, and the infinite ways in which girls, past and present, are punished for crimes they didn’t commit. Musical guest, singer/songwriter/recording artist Jonatha Brooke and playwright Laurie Flanigan Hegge are currently writing and composing a musical bringing to life the story of V as she struggles to survive injustices that will change the course of her life. We will be featuring songs from this powerful and poignant musical. Bringing this story to the present, Autumn Mason, a doula with the MN Prison Doula Project, will share her insights into making change possible after personally experiencing the trauma of incarceration, family separation and prison birth. PLUS Actor Silvia Pontaza, singer/songwriter Zippy Laske and Host Sue Scott! MN Prison Doula Project will have an information table at the show to highlight the compassionate work they are doing with incarcerated parents to create community, opportunity, and change.
